Finally found out what failed on my 13 SHO

I was close to getting a trail hawk or a Tacoma TRD pro but just didn't feel like they would make a good daily driver. I was close to buying a GC ecodiesel but I just couldn't stand the turtle powered acceleration.  So I'm still waiting for something better.

Now that you mention hellcat, wouldn't it be awesome if they made a hellcat srt jeep. That I would definitely buy.

Hold on, I just want to ensure I get this. So if your car didn't catch fire it might have been covered under warranty?

The best thing for the OP was the fire.  Ford would've never covered the engine because the car had a tune.  Tunes,WOT, and sub 40 degrees is a recipe for disaster.  Ask anyone that's owned a Lightning.  A lot of times, you won't hear the detonation, but you'll hear the Kaboom.

Ok this might be a silly question or maybe a statement. We now have 2 well documented cases of LMS tuned SHOs going kaboom. Is this something we should be worried about? How many unleashed SHOs have gone kaboom just out of curiosity?

If only 2, that'd be out of well over a 1000 tuned SHO'S through LMS, leaving the % really low. This one they also stated that it looked to be a mfg defect. My worries are low.

I can tell you this, there have been others as well. Your just going to have to take my word on it. As far worrying about it, I am not. There is to many variables to how or why they happen, ranging from the driver to inconsistencies in manufacturing. In the grand scheme of things engine failures in these cars are very few at best. Which is great! But all manufactures have them, hell Porsche recalled every 911 GT3 for engine failures.

Be nice to know if these kabooms were monitoring through torque or something and if they noticed changing KR or consistent temp increases over time. Anything....lol

Just thought I would throw it out there, I was planning on taking mine to LMS to put it on the dyno. I haven't really been crazy about the idea of a canned tune. Although these 2 failures were dyno tuned were they not?

Lol to be exact it was engine fires.. kinda funny. since were talking about a car that cost 4 brand new sho

It must be an exotic thing, the 458 had the same issue about catching fire lol.

Mine was a canned tuned.

Not sure people on the other side of the fence really want to talk about it.  By owner accounts, we know of at least 2 EB Flex and 1 SHO that have had major engine troubles.

Overall, there isn't a huge member base here, or elsewhere, that is, if we're discussing just transverse failures. I think it's unfair to weigh in, assuming there are any, any longitudinal failures, seeing as the engines/applications have a few pretty substantial differences.

That said, compared to many other platforms with exploration in engine modification, the transverse EB 3.5 definitely has a low failure rate. But, I definitely think canned tunes aren't the pinnacle of reassurance...

My $0.02 ... Sub-zero ambient temps with cool block going WOT and lugging under load (the flex was dragging logs) are the answer for at least 2 of the failures.  No argument with anything said in this thread.  I am no more concerned about mine than I would be without the tune... In fact I bought parts from Dean (Tractorak).

One of the EB flex mishaps was admitted user error

This is why I like the idea of data logged tunes.

If only I could get a decent log out of my x4.

:curse:

?? I used the X4 on a Trailblazer SS with great results. What's going on with yours?

Data degradation.

All datalogs thus far have been unable to provide the info needed to tweak my tune.

I like my tune but I am not at all happy with the SCT hardware or software.

Too bad there aren't better choices.
