PTU TSB

Have you guys heard of this one? I've seen a few threads on PTU fluid changes and what not so I thought I'd post this.

TSB #ASI-44333
NHTSA ID #10054961
Date Announced DECEMBER 01 2013
Summary: FORD: DUE TO EXCESSIVE LUBE LOSS FROM PTU, OR INTERNAL PTU FAILURE, SOME TRUCKS, WILL EXPERIENCE CONTAMINATION OR SLUDGING OF PTU LUBE, RESULTING IN AN INCREASED INTERNAL LUBE TEMPERATURE. MODEL 2011-2014 EXPLORER, TAURUS SHO.

Thanks for sharing this...first I have heard of it.  I would hope that the fix is PTU replacement.

How would you get excessive lube loss without seeing it on the garage floor or smelling it burn on the exhaust system?  I would think most people would take the car in rather than just drive it until the remaining lube turned to sludge or internal failure occurred.  Maybe some were not properly filled from the factory or not properly filled after replacing a seal????

Reading about all these PTU issues makes me a little nervous..... I am currently at 56,000 miles on my 2011 non PP.... and I am thinking I need to take some time and dig into this "possible" issue.

I can't find any tsbs on ford tech page related to this. Do you have the actual ford tsb number. If ford issued it in dec of 13 it would start with 13.

Some 2011-2014 Explorer that are Export, and 2013-2014 Police Sedan and Utility, Taurus SHO, and Explorer Sport vehicles equipped with AWD and a liquid cooled Power Take-Off Unit (PTU) may experience sludging or contamination of the PTU lube as a result of increased internal lube temperature caused by excessive lube loss from the PTU, or internal PTU failure. Please refer to Workshop Manual (WSM)section 308-07B for PTU diagnosis. If diagnostics lead to replacement of the PTU due to deteriorated lube (sludged or metal contaminants), please also replace the PTU vent hose using base part number 7034 during this repair.

Excellent! Thank you!

Any idea where the PTU vent tube is at?
I'm gonna guess on top almost directly above drain, as I saw heated fluid on the side of mine when changing.

Go on my FTP and there is actually a tsb on vent hoses not be attached properly. Pretty sure it has diagrams

From another thread we both participated in

Found it! Thanks for the help. After looking it over I don't see a vent tube in the diagrams. Most likely not included in the diagram to reduce confusion. It is very interesting to see they want you to remove and fill fluid 3 times after rotating the wheels 3 full turns. This process was only mentioned for the non PP cars. Most likely because they know it's over heated.
A cooler should have been included on all sho's.

You didn't go into the tsb folder.
