Remote start

Got my remote start installed Tuesday.  I love it.  A small one button remote with confirmation of start and a 2,500 ft range.  Just in time for the snow to start flying in Michigan today.

Cool.  I just PMd you a few questions if you don't mind.  I want to do this to my MKS but had not heard any good stories like yours....and you are so close I could drive to the same installer - very excited!

Don't hide this conversation in PM...I would love to know how well it works, range, options, etc

My office is like sitting at a mall.  From my desk to my car is about 1/4 mile and I don't even have to get out of my chair to start it.  I will have to ask the details on what model starter and interface he used.  A friend of mine works at a local car audio store as their installer and he did it at his house as a side job.  I trust him so I don't ask a lot of questions.  I paid $300 installed which is a little expensive but he said the interface he used is top notch to avoid screwing with all the electronic stuff in the car with the push button.  He also didn't need to use up one of my remotes so I still have 2 that I can use to unlock the car.

Questions and answers from the above mentioned PM.

Hey, I am in Lansing...can you tell me details of your remote start?

1. You have push button start, right? - Yes
2. Price? - $300
3. Where did you have it installed? - Side job at my friends house.  He loves doing side work
4. Model?  It's a Viper remote start
5. Do you need to shut the car off and start it again when you get in before driving? - No, if I start it with the remote the doors have to be closed and locked for it to start.  Once I unlock the car I have 45 seconds to get in and touch the brake pedal or it will turn itself off after the 45 seconds.  Once I touch the brake with the factory remote in the car it just keeps on running.

So when I had bought my SHO in march, the dealer had installed Ford's remote start. Normally this would be a good thing, however the range blows and it kills the ignition when I open any door or the trunk, deeming it pretty much useless. With winter approaching here in Michigan, I began looking into other options, one of which being Viper's 5904 remote start / security system. My only issue would be running into the same issue with the ignition dropping out upon opening the door and the fact that I would have to carry two key fobs. If I can figure out a way to move the RF chip from my factory key fob into the new viper key fob, I'd be sold. Anyone have any idea if this would be possible?

How long did it take him to install?  Does he want to make some more money on the side?  Yours is the first real success story I have heard.  Others have the shutting off issue.

this exact statment (thanks tss )

Ford's remote start is able to keep the car running once you open the doors as long as you know what you are doing...
You have to basically disable MyKey, as this is what causes is to shut off upon opening. The car can't tell what key started it so it doesn't know if its the admin key or a programmed key... it makes you restart it so it can see the key.

Totally disabling MyKey, which I doubt most of us really use anyways, and it works fine.

Is disabling my key a menu option?

since i have a '10, no ford remote start & have ford one on our escape, but range is so short,  i just had installed a viper 2 way. not cheap around $500, but my bud kolk1 had it done to his sho so his guy did mine. it's long range, but key feature is 2 way as my office is a good 500' from car. work great, it does a light sequence on fob to let me know car is starting & locking the doors, you just open the door like swipping the pillar & put foot on brake & you go,but you have to carry reg fob & it's fob

It took him less than 2 hours, more like 1 to install and he is always open to side work.  I told him I may be sending some of the guys from the forum his way and he was excited for more work.  I will attach an image of the remote attached to my factory remote.

Here is what the remote looks like. Once you press start it displays an orange led, when it conforms the car started it changes green. If it doesn't start it changes red. On e running if you press and hold the button it will turn the car off and confirm it's off with sound and led change. Simple but effective.

Wish I had know there was 1 like you got. my addition is about the same size & mine besides starting open & locks door & does trunk, but since you have to have ford fob anyway who cares & it's a couple hundred less. You did good as far as I'm concerned. The one thing I know is once you get remote start you won't go back, if their was only a way to get the seats going it would be the max.

I have the same issue with my 12 SHO. How do you disable my key so the car does not shut off when opening the doors or trying to drive.

I I have had remote start on my last 4 cars now so I would be lost without it.  My Grand Prix GXP had factory RS on it and the range was decent but nothing like this one.  My wife has pretty much the same set up on her MKX, she is a teacher and its a long ways from her classroom to the staff parking lot so I wanted her to be able to start it from her desk and know it was running.  She doesn't have My Key but her key has the remote built into it so there wasn't a reason for anything that did more than start the car.

No its not...
A friend if mine did it on his Fusion, and its some kinda process lol. A button on the remote start module has to be pushed at same time as you do something in car (cant remember exactly but he's emailing me the instructions) and this basically links the two together. Then a message will pop up asking to disable MyKey.
Now his message center says 3 admin keys, 0 mykeys.

His works as it should from Ford lol... open door and it stays running, put key in and go; hit brake without key and it kills it.

My 2013 came with Fords remote start. Its a poor system. The range is only a few hundred feet for me, both remotes. The car starts 1 out of every 3 tries. Its frustrating now that the cold weather is here in NY and the windows are frosted over in the morning. I have to walk halfway to the complex parking lot which is not far, and the fail to start is so damn frustrating. If I get another SHO (this ones leased) I am going for an aftermarket install. To clear up on the 2013 my car does not turn off when I open my doors. If you attempt to put the car in gear without pressing the ignition button it will shut off.
