I actually tried the outside first quite some time ago. A lot of the box won't fit in the car with anything on the outside.

But most of us don't track our cars. We street them and some take them to the strip. All these mods are to find a way to get the best of both worlds in one package.
With that reasoning they wouldn't provide any weatherstripping at all since a seal wouldn't be desired. I'm calling them out.
A couple of things here, First without weatherstrip or bad fitting weatherstrip seal it's useless. Even tracking your car, if you are hard on the gas at higher speed you will be getting air that is hotter than ambient. I can attest to this with both the K&N and the Airaid. Even at 60mph you drop the hammer and the IAT goes up not down at least initially. I saw this effect first hand (both Airaid and K&N).
Secondly I believe that we have proved that a CAI can work if executed correctly. And that the stock box can be improved upon. The track runs that I did with the K&N, Airaid and Stock should be proof enough. And trust me, I was as surprised as the next guy with my results. That goes for all 3 tests. We are all about improving our rides, I did this primarily to help the guys that already had the Airaid myself included. I have data logs and time slips to prove what I stated with the raw data in my first post and the link to the K&N tests. The runs were all fair with about the same amount of staging time, with 3 consecutive runs with no cool down in between.
On the street I can state that the modded Airaid out performs both the K&N and stock box hand down. Lets face fact, anything you place under the hood is going to heat soak (Stock box included). The recovery from that heat soak is what really matters here. Again I believe that I also stated my results with that during theses tests. I am in no way saying to go out and buy an Airaid and then start modding it. You guys are absolutely correct it SHOULD HAVE COME THAT WAY IN THE BOX. Trust me I was pissed about that, but I got over it. I picked up 2/10ths on my 1/4 times. I am really happy with that, I wasn't expecting it but for sure happy. I am early waiting for my next mod (some new catted DPs from Power Parts) and then cool fall weather. And really see if I can't hit low 12.5s!
And Airaid, if you are reading this wake the F**K UP! For a $2 part you are really pissing off a lot of people. Christ, you are starting to look like GM. Oh wait did I say that out loud.

Call Airaid and tell them you want the D style seal not the blade. They should send it to you. You can then get the foam from the first post. You might want to hold off till tomorrow. I am in the process of testing the taller blade style strip that I got yesterday.

And it did form a much better seal then the original one that came with the kit. My only concern is that it's not as playable as my design and pushes up on the hood a fair bit. It makes it harder to close the hood. It did a fair job of isolating the air from the box from the engine. As you can see from the pic below.
That said I'm going to keep my setup, it seals perfectly as good as the oem box. Airaid is sending me a D style weatherstrip at no charge. As the one I am currently using is from my old K&N and I have now sold that unit
. When I spoke to them today they said there was 2 reasons not to go with a sealed top. One was volume. They wanted as much as possible, 2 was cost. It would have raised the cost of the kit considerably. I don't believe I said that, Christ get over it. 99% of CAIs sold don't do ****. In fact they hurt power. We just showed you how to get a decent increase to intake with a simple $10 mod. All the other intakes I have seen (including my old K&N) can't be made to perform as good as the stock intake. When I called K&N you know what they said? It made more power on the dyno and that's what we stated in our claims. So basically go F*** yourself. Airaid has done what they can to help me out and I have to give them props for that. I asked for taller they sent it to me. I asked for the D style weatherstrip and they are sending that too. So if you bought one spend the $10 to make it work better that it was even intended to. If not list it for sale. I'll bet you someone will buy it up quick! I had a hell of a time unloading my K&N.

And by their volume comment, they obviously have no idea what happens to the density of air when it's heated.

You may be OK with modding the box you already spent cash on but there are others who may not. Personally, I'm at the point in my life, I'm not interested in working on my car, I pay people to put high quality products on my car. I'd rather be driving it.

Ok let me see if I can make this clear one last time lol. We took Airaid's intake and made it better. Tell me you have never done that to a product? Did it work as advertised, no not really. Can it be made to work? Yes. I am ok with that, because I already own one.
I would be a lot more pissed if it was the K&N that couldn't even be made to work.

I am working on that one, it's in and I am in the process if testing it. I wish there was a gauge for Torque to show if it was working it not. That would make things a lot easier. But in about 1k miles I will have a report. Just a few weeks more.
Just spoke to Airaid. They are sending me a taller weather stripping today. The guy I spoke to said the box should seal tightly to the underside of the hood. Also make special not the weather stripping needs to flare outward from the CAI box. The picture I saw earlier flairs inward. As matter of fact mine flares inward which is wrong. The reason to have it flare outward, that way the gasket pulls up snug to the hood. If it flares inward it will let hot air into the box regardless if it is snug or not to the underside of the hood.
Great customer service and they didn't hesitate in sending me the taller weather stripping.
