PTU oil change write up?

Very small volumes of oil in these units. No wonder it appears to be cooking. Some gear lubes are better rated at heat tolerance. Anybody filled with Amsoil or Redline fluids?

And no drain plug? Ugh...that is mind numbing.

It is a small volume of oil, but I've read various stuff that rates Motorcraft Syn. gear oil as one of the better ones available...ended up using it when I had mine replaced.

I am not sure if I agree with you Mark as that what is supposedly put in from the factory. Or at least thats what manual calls for when replaced.

Understand Chris, just repeating what I've seen written several times. I don't know enough about the PTU to know whether it's the grease that's causing the problem.  I've suspected it's a combination of the small volume of grease in the PTU and the amount of power/torque that it's asked to handle.  I mean there must be some reason that most high performance applications increase the amount of oil/grease that they use in engine's, transmissions, drivetrains.... however, that is pure speculation.

I know Mark, not downing you at all. I just question how good motorcraft synthetic oil is. My understand is when oil sludges up like this basically grease it clogs oil passage way to the bearings.

I agree with you Chris.. especially about the clogging part. But since I changed it at 25K miles. I figured it wouldn't be in too bad of shape.  However when I have it changed at 50K I plan on using Royal Purple... also planning on using RP in both trans and rear differential when I change them at 30K.

Alot of Mazdaspeed6 guys rolling with Motorcraft syn gear lube in their MTXs. I suppose there might be some merit to its lubricating quality. Doesn't mean that it holds up to high heat/repeated heat cycles.

18 oz is nuts though. Even if you discount the tq load from the power train, the load from hustling a 4400 lb car (or more with the flex) has got to be pretty intense.

Is the PTU in the SHO water cooled?

Either way, I have had good experience with Amsoil...
May be what I switch to eventually.

This is an old topic, and I am not sure if this has been discussed before. But researching about doing a PTU fluid change I cam across this in the owners manual.
The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) does not require any normal scheduled maintenance. Do not check or change the PTU lubricant unless the unit has been submerged in water or shows signs of leakage
The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) in Taurus SHOTM performance package vehicles is electronically monitored and notifies the driver of required service by displaying the message Change AWD Power Transfer Unit Lube in the information display. The PTU lube will be more likely to require a fluid change if the vehicle has experienced extended periods of extreme/severe duty cycle driving. Do not check or change the PTU lubricant unless the unit has been submerged in water, shows signs of leakage or a message indicating required service is displayed. Contact your authorized dealer for service and to reset the PTU lube life monitor.

There is a PTU lube life monitor on the SHO PP(I'm sorry that sounds kinda funny)? Does this mean that there is an actual drain on the PP? Any insight would be great.

I realize that others have posted their concerns with the change of the fluid in the PTU. Hence my desicion to chamge mine, i was unaware that there is any difference in the PTU between PP and non PP cars. According to the manual the PP cars are the only ones that you are supposed to change the fluid and it is monitored by the computer. I wonder what the PID is for that?

I have seen several examples of transmission and rear ends originally listed as lifetime fluids. Or like the owners manual states regular service not needed. Then after a few years when the car is out of Warranty and revised maintenance schedule shows up.  Not sure if they do this as a selling point for a new car. Or as a way to generate parts sales in the future on big ticket items.  One example was on my W12 powered Volkswagen Phaeton the transmission was originally listed as filled for life. Then after a few years that got changed to replacing the fluid every 40.000 miles

Can one of you that is planning on changing there fluid soon send in the used fluid for testing??  Does Blackstone test other types of oil?

Im changing it this weekend, ill see if i can get it tested. Has anyone done this on a 13 or 14? With PP Just wondering if they have a drain valve? Last time i was at my dealer they mentioned they have only seen one with a drain plug. And this was on a new unit they changed out due to failure.

I'm doing mine this weekend too. My understanding is the 13's have a drain plug, but you still have to pump in the new oil through a plug at the top. I'll get under it tomorrow and give it a shot.

the PP PTU has an extra cooler so there is curiosity to see if the fluid will look better with the PP package.

I can send mine off if someone gives me the source and reasoning.
