PTU oil change write up?

Shoboat, fluid would have to pump in thru drain hole. Both device mention above could do this, with appropriate attachment to the end of thee hose to create a good seal when filling. Of course this procedure will be a little messy when reinstall drain plug. Another thing that could be done is to just install a small valve in the drain plug hole. Pump your oil in and close the valve.

Thanks Crash, I think I'm going to  get the car on a lift. Trying to do this while on jack stands for the first time trying to get the fluid back in it doesn't sound fun. Ill let you guys know how I make out. I think I'll tackle the rear diff first.

I just got quoted $200.00 (Ford dealer) for PTU change/service.  What is everyone else paying?

i was just quoted $56 per differential by Sears Auto Center...

I seriously doubt if Sears understands the PTU in your MKS and I would be surprised if they have ever changed the gear lube in one.  Are you sure they aren't talking about differentials and transfer case on a 4X4 pickup?

i told them the make and model of the car.

i'm going there this weekend, if there is an issue i'll let the forum know.

i think i'll also insist on them collecting the old fluid for me to take home...

Sears did end up completing the service for $95.00 total.

However, it wasn't without some minor complication.  the service manager i had spoken to the previous day was not there, so i talked to another tech and he said no problem about changing out the PTU and rear diff fluid.  But, he eventually realized he was not fully aware of Ford's PTU (he was assuming it was basically changing out the trans fluid, since the MKS and SHO platform is primarily FWD).  he came and told me that the rear diff fluid change was not an issue but the PTU through him off at first.  he had to go into the MKS car logs and look up the PTU unit schematics.  he actually took me in with him while he looked up everything.  after about 20 minutes, including time of me and him talking about AWD systems, this forum and other things; he said he felt comfortable performing the service (some of you all's write ups actually helped out)  :).  I said for him to be absolutely sure and that if not i didn't have to get it done there.  He assured me everything was good.

so he performed the service, it seemed like it took about 45 minutes or so.  i had brought in my own fluids (Royal Purple) even though Sears had a brand that they used in house.  he collected and showed me some of the fluid that he extracted from each end.  the fluid was extremely dirty looking and dark but was not thick or pasty at all.  he also mentioned that he double checked the Royal Purple weights to make sure they were correct for the vehicle because the new fluid seemed rather thin to him, everything checked out there.

so i guess all in all everything went OK.  i will probably have the fluid checked and perhaps changed again pretty soon at a BG dealer, since they do an actual flush of the PTU and not just a suctioning out.  the car feels and drives fine, as far as the trans and AWD is concerned (i am having a slight vibration around 65-70 mph after i got my new wheels put on, which i plan on having the installer look at and take care of)...

My Ford dealer wouldn't even flush mine. Several service managers all sttod around to listen to what I was saying and each one basically agreed that Ford doesn't recommend it unless its screwed up, leaking, or sumberged. The main guy tells me that basically you run it as is and hope for the best becasue to change the fluid and flush it I would be looking at $5k becasue they have to drop the cradle to get the PTU out to do it. They recommended I go to a more performance oriented dealer to do the job. He stated they wont touche it becasue "if you overfill it my the slightest margin it'll blow up and we won't take that risk here".

I like the valve drain and pump in through the drain idea but now what about the fluid level going in ? Just measure what comes out ??????

These dealer amaze me, the worst thing that would happen you over fill it is that it over follow out the vent tube and leave stain in your drive way.

...or at speed gets sucked up all over the back of your ride.... not to mention potential damage from overfill!

wait, what !?

Driving down the road... vent is "dripping" extra PTU fluid due to overfill .... This gets into the airstream under the car... gets atomized and swirls up in the vacuum behind the trunk lid and deposited on the paint.  Don't know if it's much... but had a similar sequence of event happen on another car with a leaking HP oil pump.  Just a thought and if it occurs it can't be good for the paint.

Damn 5k for an oil change, they don't even charge that on a Lamborghini lol.

basically, but you do also get a new PTU included at no charge :)

Wait, so if I didn't do PTU maintenance and ran mine until it went out, they'd charge me 5K for a new one?

if they did they'd be ripping you off. I believe a new non-pp PTU list for $750 and I believe the job of replacing 4hrs. So unless your dealer charging 1k per hr.

Ok so I have some more info for the 13+ guys with PP to do the fluid change. It seems from the shop manual, you need to drop the cat in order to access the fill hole. I am trying to get the exact procedure. According to the shop manual water cooled PTU's require the cat to be removed to access the fill point. I'm not sure how hard that is, I didn't really look at it. But since I am looking at the DPs I will probably do it at that time.

Well that's slightly annoying. Thanks for the info, though.

And FWIW, when the PTO (similar to PTU) on my Speed6 failed a year and a half or so ago, I got a pretty amusing quote for replacement from my Mazda dealer...

$5,000

I lol'd, had it towed back to the house, put it on jack stands and swapped a salvaged unit in for $900 total. Goofy bastards.

Dealers are morons it seems. Mine didn't want to remove tires off of my wheels on my 5.0 to install tpms because the sidewall was too thin (despite their claimed "state of the art" equipment); however, they're the same size as a gt500 factory tire. 96mm btw.
